Throughout her career Dr Martin has been on a mission to enrich Australia’s mental health landscape. In 2006 Dr Martin founded Sydney Psychology Centre and over 13 years she grew the practice and led a team of psychologists that worked to improve the mental health of thousands of individuals. In 2019 she sold Sydney Psychology Centre and entered the Federal Parliament where she chaired the first Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Committee. As the Committee Chair, she led an inquiry into Australia’s mental health system and produced key recommendations for reform. While in Parliament Dr Martin contributed to the Health, Disability (NDIS) and Family Law Committees, and contributed to an inquiry into Family and Domestic Violence. Dr Martin called for protective behaviours, consent education and relationship skills to be embedded into the school curriculum and in 2023 she was appointed to The Federal Department of Education’s National Respectful Relationships Education Expert Working Group. In 2024 Dr Martin was appointed Ambassador of Australians for Mental Health to help ensure mental health is at the heart of national life.
In 2022 Dr Martin returned to private practice (at Family in Mind) where she works along side psychiatrists and offers psychology services across the lifespan. Her focus is treating mental health problems ‘early in life, early in illness’. She takes a family systems approach and believes multi-disciplinary care achieves the best outcomes for patients with complex care needs. Dr Martin has skills in a range of evidence based therapeutic approaches and offers individualised and group therapy and psychological assessments. Dr Martin has a special interest in supporting families going through separation and divorce and provides consultancy services to organisations. Dr Martin is currently working on establishing a new mental health service, and in 2025 she will officially launch Psychological Solutions (Australia).
Dr Martin also enjoys disability advocacy and in 2022 she joined the board of Australia’s peak body for Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD), FSHD Global Research Foundation. She is currently conducting research on the psychological support needs of patients with FSHD.
